Contemporary Landscape Artist The landscapes appear, at first, to be calm and meditative in both content and colour, with soft, uncomplicated shapes merging into one another. Yet, on closer inspection, many layers are seen - usually scratched, abraded and scraped - revealing snippets of what lies beneath. The unpredictability is both exciting and symbolic of weathering, endurance and resilience. Though inspiration comes initially from contemplative wanderings (inside and out) there isn't a composition in mind when a piece is started. It slowly develops in the painting process - mostly imagined, or perhaps ‘remembered’. Each one represents a place where inner and outer landscapes meet and act as an invitation to pause and reflect. Sustainability is also important here, so the canvases are made from abandoned, discarded or donated wood already in existence. The substrates are transformed with natural mediums like chalk paint, pigments and charcoal. Acrylic, Watercolour, Pen & Ink I enjoy the immediacy of pen and ink and watercolour when on location, to capture my surroundings, whether it is a bustling cafe scene with colourful parasols or a tranquil landscape. I also relish the boldness of acrylics, to build up light and shade, often painted at home with reference to my photos, sketches and colour notes. I love using colour to represent the distinctive palettes of different seasons, locations and countries. My work evokes memories of the colours, sounds and scents of a place to me, long after I return home. I have completed an art foundation course and graphic design degree, specialising in illustration. I worked as a graphic designer, including working for a book publisher in Oxford. I have sold many pieces of my own work and enjoy undertaking private commissions. Telephone: 07855 096952 Email: [email protected] Studio No 4 |

Textured/Abstract/Acrylic/ Painting With a lifelong passion for creativity, my professional journey began in animation, media, and music composition, before I became a teacher working with young people with special educational needs. After a period away from art, I rediscovered my creative spirit through painting; swapping digital tools for acrylic paints, different materials for texture, brushes, acrylic inks and spray paints. As a self-taught artist, I now specialise in abstract art, exploring the beauty of texture, colour, and form on canvas. My work is a reflection of my evolving artistic journey and my love for the tactile, expressive, nature of texture and painting. Wes Groves
Raku Ceramic Artist I have been developing my Raku ceramic creations over the past few years; these range from thrown pots to different types of birds. I have been developing Raku Puffins, Owls and am now working on a range of Penguins. I use many alternative Raku techniques and am always experimenting to see what different effects I can create. I love the Great Pottery Throw Down and Raku week. So, imagine after making something, I go out into my garden, place it in my oil drum kiln, fire it to 1000 C, opening the kiln whilst it’s still very hot, lift the item out using very thick gloves and long handle tongs and put it into a dustbin filled with sawdust, producing lots of dancing flames or plunging in a thin bread mix liquid with the smells of baking bread then plunge into water to stop it cooking. It’s Fun time again! Telephone: 07885 297640 Email: [email protected] Instagram: raku_wes Studio No 1 |

Claude A Lester
Multi Media Sculptor & Wildlife Photographer Having dabbled in photography as a child, I returned to it at the beginning of the digital age with a bridge camera. After the initial frustration of many empty sky shots, I persevered to finally got a photo of a beautiful eagle swooping down towards me. A photographic safari in Kenya, a wildebeest migration later and I was hooked. Since then I have travelled extensively to the Arctic, Alaska, Madagascar and South America. I completely fell in love with the feeling of getting close & experiencing the animal’s own environment. I started my sculpture journey in wood. My first wood carving was based on two trees that had grown together in the forest. I am now used mixed materials including metal in my work. Along with Brett Banks, I will be holding a Stone Carving Workshop at Black Shed Studios. Fused Glass I like to keep my options open when it comes to glass design. I see something and wonder how I can transform it into fused glass. Inspiration includes nature, childhood games and abstract art, from which I create practical items for the home as well as decorative art and jewellery. There is always a sense of excitement on opening the kiln and seeing the magical transformation that has taken place during firing. Glass comes into its own when interacting with light, be it sunlight or candlelight, reflected or transmitted. Like us, fused glass is multi-faceted, having the ability to be both deeply complex and wonderfully straight-forward. It is a truly beautiful medium that has the power to bring joy and lift spirits. Enamelled Precious Metal Jewellery I create unique pieces using silver, enamel, a touch of gold and the occasional gemstone. I love to experiment with textures and finishes, resulting in a very wearable range of jewellery with abstract patterns and colours. My favourite finishes are those that bring out the best of the pieces. For example, a heavily oxidised finish makes gold accents pop, whereas a brushed, soft sheen adds a contemporary feel that highlights a texture or shape. I work from my home studio in the heart of East Sussex where I've been making jewellery for over fifteen years. My inspiration comes from the colours and textures of the skies, downlands and waters along the South Coast and the South Downs National Park. I enjoy the challenge of developing new skills and am currently practicing engraving techniques to add different types of texture. However, the joy of colour brought by enamels and gemstones is never far from my practice. Paintings in Oil, Mixed Media & Watercolour My ideal is to be inspired by a particular shape or play of light in the natural world, sketch it, take photos and work from the initial impressions in the studio to create a landscape or seascape. Jewellery I am a jewellery designer specialising in aluminium, creating pieces influenced by mid-century design and modern sculpture. Using traditional techniques, I shape aluminium sheet into elegant forms, incorporating materials such as drinks cans, coloured perspex, wood and brass to craft unique earrings that are finished with sterling silver hooks. Recently, I've been exploring pendant necklaces, a process I find deeply satisfying, from sourcing beads - often reclaimed from vintage jewellery - to carefully stringing and finishing each piece. Every necklace is a one of a kind composition combining contemporary aesthetics with bold, sculptural elements Telephone: 07930 336766 Email: [email protected] Instagram: @lauranicholson Studio No 18 |

Stained Glass I am a stained glass artist and have a studio in Jarvis Brook where I make commissions and teach workshops. I love working with glass, and watching how the colours of each piece reflect and bounce around the room when the light shines on them. I love to make stained glass sun catchers using the copper foil technique, but also like to use the traditional method using lead, and making panels for stained glass windows. I love to experiment and make 3D pieces such as boxes, lanterns and orchids and other flowers too. I am inspired mainly by nature and like to make pieces which reflect creation such as the sea, the sun and flowers. One of my main passions is holding stained glass workshops and teaching the basics of stained glass, so that anyone can come and try, no matter what experience they have. Everyone is creative, it's just taking the time to find it in you and then going for it with enthusiasm! Woodblock Prints & Sculpture The ancient coppiced woodland where I live has been quietly informing my work, traditional skills and the appreciation of wood, my background as a carpenter, designer and maker has led me to be influenced by the natural qualities of the materials I work with, this in turn has led me to become an accidental print maker. The prints are made with left over oak, sweet chestnut and printing inks, These materials I have saved and collected over the years and using the reuse, rethink and repurpose mantra informs and controls my process. I am and have long since been inspired by Japanese design and aesthetic, the traditional Japanese technique Yaki Suki I use to scorch and capture grain in my sculptural pieces. The intention is to celebrate, explore and capture the grain and the consequence of negative space. Telephone: 07900014868 Email: [email protected] Instagram: sarahcaplinwoodware Studio No 13 |

Drawings, Jackets, Screens I studied at Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts ( NDD, ATD) and the Royal College of Music where I studied at the Opera School. I also designed costumes and painted sets there to help finance my studies. (I sang at Glyndebourne/English Opera Group etc and was part of a quartet specialising in Victorian song. We performed regularly at Purcell Room and Wigmore Hall). I had a career in music and also my own antiques restoration and painted furniture business and clients included commissions from Fortnum and Mason. I have been lucky enough to run two such creative careers side by side and my art is very much influenced by rhythm, line and colour. My jackets are made from preloved and up-cycled fabrics using a flowing line and being creative with the fabric and decoration. Telephone: 01892 664534 Email: [email protected] Studio No 1 |
